The Structure of ECOLE
ECOLE operates as a non-hierarchical, open, and inclusive organisation. Our activities and operations are guided by consensus-based decision making principles to honor the roles and contributions of our Collective, which include:
-
Each year, 10 facilitators are recruited to practice sustainable, intentional, and communal living at the ECOLE house. These facilitators carry out the activities, events, and collaborations by ECOLE. The facilitators also plan and conduct micro-projects that serve as applied education initiatives. By living and working together, ECOLE facilitators practice and cultivate their own skills and knowledge in social and ecological sustainability, communal living, community organizing and building, and alternative learning.
-
The ECOLE Board of Directors is made up of volunteers from the McGill and Montréal communities to oversee the project’s operations, management, budgeting, hiring, and key documents such as our Constitution and Bylaws. The Board is elected at the Annual General Meeting that takes place around November every year. The Board usually consists of a range of representatives: McGill students, staff, faculty, and community members outside the university.
-
The ECOLE coordinator is a paid position that oversees the logistical and operational aspects of the project. The coordinator works with the board, the bookkeeper, the facilitators, and collective members to ensure the activities and programming of ECOLE go smoothly and effectively.
-
The ECOLE Collective describes all individuals that participate in ECOLE’s programming and activities. The Collective is made up of the above groups (facilitators, board, coordinator) as well as community members who use our space, who take part in our events and activities, and who contribute to the decisions made at ECOLE. Being part of the Collective does not stipulate formal registration, and we welcome any community member to be a part of our Collective activities including our potlucks, meetings, and other events.
